Alebrijes on Paseo de la Reforma

We LOVE seeing craft used in public art! While walking to a meeting along Paseo de La Reforma, we stumbled upon these giant alebrijes, cráneos and figures of catrinas!

Every year they decorate the street for a week with these amazing and intricate creations made by artists and artisans. You'll see many techniques used and some fun creations within the animals - like dream catchers!

Alebrijes: fantastical creatures painted with bright colors; traditional folk art figurines. You can find these tiny figurines in Oaxaca (where we're going next!).

Cráneos: these are giant versions of the calaveras that are decorated for altars during Day of the Dead.

Catrinas: La Catrina was originally created by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada, one of our favorite printmakers. These are giant versions that also celebrate Day of the Dead.

If you're in Mexico City between the end of October and early November be sure to check it out! If you're not in the area - check out these photos we took to share with you:
